What Is a Day Master? The Center of Your Korean Birth Chart

One character is you

A saju chart has eight characters — two each for your birth year, month, day, and hour. Seven of them describe the world you were born into: your family line, your generation, your early environment, your inner hours. One of them is YOU: the heavenly stem of your day pillar, called the Day Master (일간, ilgan).

Everything else in the chart is read in relation to it. The other characters help it, drain it, challenge it, or feed it — and that web of relationships is what a saju reading actually reads.

Ten day masters, ten temperaments

There are ten possible Day Masters: each of the five elements in a yang (expansive) or yin (concentrated) form. Yang Wood is a pine tree — upright, principled, slow to bend. Yin Wood is a vine — flexible, social, finding a way around every obstacle. Yang Fire is the sun; Yin Fire is a candle flame. Same element, very different lives.

Strong self, weak self — neither is better

A 'strong' Day Master isn't a compliment and a 'weak' one isn't a diagnosis. A strong Day Master has abundant self-energy: such people push outward, and their charts are read for where that force can go without burning others. A weak Day Master draws power from connection and environment: their charts are read for the support lines.

Korean readers put enormous weight on this axis because it flips every other interpretation. The same wealth star that spells opportunity for a strong chart can spell overwhelm for a weak one.
